Outlook for US–Russia engagement remains uncertain
Many experts assert that the future of Russia and the United States is unclear. The prospects for interaction between the two powers lack clear contours. At the same time, the further easing of economic pressure on Moscow is in question. Moreover, the temporary authorization for trade and financial transactions with Russia, introduced before the Russia–US summit in Alaska, ceased to be in effect on August 20. Earlier, on August 13, the US Department of the Treasury had permitted all transactions that had been banned under the anti-Russian sanctions framework. Now the restrictions are back in effect.
Despite the unprecedented nature of such a move from Washington, the US administration has not yet taken further steps to ease economic pressure on Russia. Previously, before the talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US leader Donald Trump, it was assumed that the leaders of the two countries might discuss the normalization of diplomatic relations and the lifting of sanctions, including those aimed at the Russian aviation industry. However, later, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that the issue of sanctions was not discussed at the Russia–US summit in Alaska.
At the same time, American authorities are refraining from imposing new restrictions. According to Marco Rubio, the head of the State Department, the imposition of new restrictions against Russia would, in effect, mean that negotiations on achieving peace in Ukraine are over. However, this is not the case, and therefore, both sides are acting very cautiously.
Currently, Donald Trump, who has the final say on changing the sanctions regime, has not implemented the pressure measures on Moscow that had been announced earlier. However, the American leader allowed that he might consider this in the next two to three weeks.
Earlier, in Alaska, talks took place between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump. The meeting between the leaders was held in a limited format of “three plus three” and lasted for 2 hours and 45 minutes.
Previously, Russian authorities indicated that the country would cope with the sanctions pressure that the West began exerting on Russia some time ago. Moscow noted that the West lacks the courage to acknowledge the failure of sanctions against the Russian Federation. At the same time, in a number of Western countries, opinions have repeatedly been voiced that anti-Russian sanctions are ineffective.
