Strategy buys Bitcoin first time in two months, but market sees it as meme opportunity rather than buy signal

According to the filed Form 8-K, Strategy purchased 4,603 Bitcoins at an average price of $80,318, increasing its reserve to 845,050 coins with a total value of $63.3 billion at an average entry price of $75,413. This is the company's first purchase since mid-June, when it acquired an additional 1,587 BTC for roughly $100 million. The transaction was financed through the sale of MSTR shares worth $602 million, of which $30 million was allocated to bolster cash reserves, and $151.8 million was used for the repurchase of STRC preferred shares.

The return to purchases was not a surprise for those following Michael Saylor's communication style. On Sunday, he published a short post on X saying, "We're back," which has become a signature move for the founder, who traditionally hints at significant treasury decisions with cryptic weekend posts before official announcements.

The reaction of the crypto market to the news was surprisingly subdued, showing no noticeable movement in Bitcoin prices or any significant shift in trader sentiment. Instead, the market reacted more vigorously not to the purchase itself, but to its timing, prompting another round of mockery over the long-established patterns in the company's behavior. The irony of the situation is that Strategy sold part of its reserves over the summer at prices significantly lower than current levels; in July and August, the company recorded transactions in the $63,000-64,000 range, explaining this as a necessity to strengthen its balance sheet and meet dividend obligations for STRC, and now that Bitcoin has risen to $80,000, it has become an aggressive buyer again. This sequence of selling during declines and buying during rises, which is directly opposed to the classic principle of "buy the dips, sell the peaks," has sparked a wave of criticism.

I remind you that Saylor has faced strong criticism this year, publicly defending himself against accusations of hypocrisy by stating that he has never sold a single satoshi personally, as Strategy is a public company and not his personal wallet, but the repetitiveness of the "sold cheap, bought dear" pattern has turned yet another similar transaction into a subject of ongoing jokes rather than unconditional market trust.

As for the technical picture of Bitcoin, buyers are currently targeting a return to the $79,200 level, which opens a direct path to $81,300, and from there it's just a stone's throw away to the $83,600 level, the breach of which would signify attempts to return to a bull market. In case Bitcoin falls, I expect buyers at the $77,500 level. A return of the trading instrument below this area could quickly drop BTC to around $75,300. The farthest target will be the $72,800 area.

Regarding the technical picture of Ethereum, a clear consolidation above the $2,504 level opens a direct path to $2,557. The farthest target will be the high around $2,624, the breach of which would indicate a strengthening of bullish sentiment in the market and a return of interest from buyers. In case Ethereum falls, I expect buyers at the $2,459 level. A return of the trading instrument below this area could quickly pull ETH down to around $2,415. The farthest target will be the $2,373 area.

What's on the chart

  • The red lines represent support and resistance levels, where the price is expected to either pause or react sharply.
  • The green line shows the 50-day moving average.
  • The blue line is the 100-day moving average.
  • The lime line is the 200-day moving average.

Price testing or crossing any of these moving averages often either halts movement or injects fresh momentum into the market.
