Goldman Sachs: Trump favors $40–$50 oil

US President Donald Trump has some distinct preferences when it comes to oil prices. According to analysts at Goldman Sachs, Trump appears to be comfortable with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude trading between $40 and $50 per barrel. This seems to be Trump’s preferred price range for oil, the firm noted.
Goldman Sachs reviewed the president’s public comments on energy markets, particularly his posts on social media, and found a pattern. When WTI rises above $50, Trump often calls for lower prices, while a drop toward $40 per barrel is typically followed by comments on the need to push prices higher.
Energy and US dominance in the sector are key themes for the president, and he does not hold back when addressing them. Goldman Sachs analysts noted that, given President Trump's consistent involvement in oil-related matters, it was plausible he might attempt to influence prices toward his favored range. They suggest that this factor alone could place downward pressure on the oil market.
Trump’s stance, they argue, could be a significant driver of downward pressure on oil prices in the coming years, especially in an environment already complicated by geopolitical risks, including ongoing tensions between the United States and China.
