EU devising retaliatory measures against Trump’s tariffs

This week, EU legislators are set to assemble to develop joint measures in response to potential actions by US President Donald Trump. The reason remains the same—massive tariffs, which are causing trouble for everyone. Meanwhile, the American leader has toughened his stance in tariff negotiations ahead of the deadline—August 1.

At present, most European leaders are poised to proceed with negotiations with Washington. However, no progress was made during previous meetings. Nevertheless, EU policymakers remain optimistic and hope to reach an agreement within the next two weeks despite the lack of notable progress in the talks.

However, the actions of Trump’s administration have left experienced negotiators bewildered, as Washington intends to impose almost universal tariffs of more than 10% on EU imports. Besides, fewer goods will be exempt from these duties. Aviation products, certain medical devices, unpatented medicines, some alcoholic beverages, and certain types of industrial equipment are affected by the tariff "roller".

Still, negotiators from the European Commission and the White House remain hopeful. "I am confident that we will make a deal," US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick predicts the outcome. "I think all key countries will realize that it's better to open their markets to the United States than to pay substantial tariffs."

The official's statements came after a meeting with representatives of European trade agencies. Against this backdrop, the question of the tariff size remains unresolved.
