AI boom poses threat to financial stability, IMF chief economist warns
Concentration of supply chains for artificial intelligence among a small number of countries and corporations poses a serious threat to global financial stability, Silvana Tenreyro, the IMF’s chief economist, warned at an IMF‑World Bank session in Bangkok, TASS reports. While the digital technology boom has been a key driver of the global upswing, its structure is creating dangerous imbalances.
Tenreyro pointed to critical bottlenecks arising from the concentration of chip production and infrastructure in the hands of a few players. A correction in overvalued tech assets or a major cyber incident could quickly ripple through supply chains and knock growth across the global economy, she added.
The technology surge is also sharpening labor market challenges. IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva has likened the impact of automation on jobs to a “slow‑moving tsunami.” The fund warns that widespread adoption of neural networks could have large social consequences, with young workers and recent graduates among the most vulnerable.
