The fortune of the world's richest people (1% of the total population) is equal to the total income of the remaining 99% of inhabitants. The organization also reports that 62 people have the same amount of assets as all the poorest people put together. According to the Oxfam study, the rich have now become richer, and the poor have become poorer.
Five years ago, the wealth of the poorest half of humanity could be equated to the fortune of 388 people. At the same time, the income of the poorest half of the world's population (about 3.6 billion people) has fallen by a trillion dollars since 2010.
Oxfam published its report on the eve of the World Economic Forum in Davos. The organization also found that almost half of the most rich people are US citizens, 17 people are residents of Europe, and the rest of them live in China, Brazil, Mexico, Japan, and Saudi Arabia.
Representatives of Oxfam openly declare that it is time for world leaders to do more in this area, and not just to recognize that the problem exists if they really want to achieve poverty reduction.
"We cannot continue to allow hundreds of millions of people to go hungry while resources that could be used to help them are sucked up by those at the top", said Winnie Byanyima, Executive Director of Oxfam International.
