The earthquake centered at a depth of 9 kilometers in the Macerata province. Ground vibrations caused significant damage in most places of the province.
Ground vibrations could be felt in some other Italian regions: Umbria, Lazio, Marche and Abruzzo. Even Rome, Florence, and Perugia suffered from earth motions.
Residents of the regions affected by the earthquake were transferred to safe areas. Some of them were located in the Red Cross office, the rest were provided with shelters.
Many residents of the affected regions decided to wait through the earthquake in their vehicles. They left their houses and were sitting in cars.
