On Wednesday, May 24, US President Donald Trump visited the Vatican. There was the first official meeting with Pope Francis.
The two men met in the pope's private study for nearly half an hour, joined only by an interpreter.
After a personal talk, Francis welcomed a high-ranking delegation comprising the wife of the US President Melanie Trump, his daughter Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner, as well as the Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and a number of presidential advisors, including National Security Assistant Herbert McMaster.
The pontiff blessed Melanya and asked what the guests ate in Rome. The president's wife and his daughter were dressed according to the protocol of the Vatican. This prescription implies the absence of three colors in clothing – white, red and purple (the colors of the garb of the Pope and church dignitaries). The women wore black dresses with lace elements, on their heads there were handkerchiefs, although this attribute is no longer considered to be compulsory for women during an audience with the pontiff.
Donald Trump and Francis exchanged handshakes. At the end of the meeting, the Pope presented the President of the United States a commemorative medallion.
After an audience with the pontiff, Trump went to Brussels to conduct negotiations with representatives of the EU and NATO. Than, he will return to Italy for another summit.
