The stock market ended in negative territory. The S&P 500 snapped its nine-session winning streak, closing 0.6% lower than the previous close. At its intraday high, the index approached positive territory but eventually traded down as much as 0.9%.
Selling activity reflected a period of consolidation following the market's strong rally from April lows. In April, the S&P 500 exited correction territory and closed above its 50-day moving average during a robust upward trend.
Losses in Monday's session were relatively mild compared to the scale of recent gains. The market's ongoing resilience to sell-offs offered support for equities, along with a better-than-expected ISM Services Index for April, which helped ease recession concerns.
Treasury Secretary Bessent also acknowledged that, in his view, the US is very close to reaching some trade deals. Losses among a few mega-cap stocks significantly impacted index performance.
The Vanguard Mega Cap Growth ETF (MGK) fell 0.7%, while the Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF (RSP) dropped 0.3%. Consumer discretionary (-1.3%) and technology (-0.9%) sectors, both housing many mega-cap stocks, were among the weakest performers, along with energy (-2.0%).
Oil prices dropped ($57.16 per barrel, -$1.20, -2.1%) after OPEC+ announced an increase in production by 411,000 barrels per day starting in June, which pressured the energy sector. The yield on 10-year US Treasuries settled two basis points higher than on Friday, at 4.34%. In this context, today's $58 billion auction of 3-year notes saw solid demand.
