Feud between US president and Fed chair unfolds, disregarding all rules

Incredibly, US President Donald Trump intends to sue Jerome Powell, the Chairman of the Federal Reserve. The feud has reached a boiling point, and it is unclear how it will end.

Recently, the US leader urged the Fed chairman to “immediately cut” the key interest rate. However, Jerome Powell ignored the request and preferred to stick to his chosen course. This infuriated Trump, who recently announced his plans to file a lawsuit against the Federal Reserve chief. The decision was largely driven by positive US inflation data. According to the latest reports, consumer prices in July rose by 2.7% year-on-year, not 2.8% as experts had forecast.

Encouraged by the favorable inflation figures, the US leader once again called Powell, who refuses to lower the funds rate, “late” and a “loser.” Donald Trump insists that the damage the Fed chairman has inflicted on the American economy is “immeasurable.”

The US president has demanded that the Federal Reserve chairman immediately cut interest rates. Trump also plans to sue him over the “horrible and extremely incompetent work” in managing construction projects related to Federal Reserve buildings.

For months now, the state leader has been relentlessly roasting Powell for refusing to lower interest rates. After the regulator kept the funds rate at 4.25%–4.5% at its latest meeting, the US president called the official a “big loser,” “mean and stupid,” and even advocated for his removal.

Importantly, Powell’s term as Fed Chairman expires in May 2026. Nevertheless, occasional reports emerge about the possibility of his early dismissal, although Trump denies them. Some journalists believe that the issue of renovation costs for the Fed’s historic buildings, which the US president is keeping under close watch, could potentially trigger Powell’s early departure from office.
